Social Security Administration

You can apply directly online at ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up.

At what age can I qualify?

Medicare is our country's health insurance program for people age 65 or older. You'll sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B through Social Security, so you can make both retirement and Medicare choices and withhold any premiums from your benefit payments.

What if I'm under 65?

If you're under age 65, you may be eligible to get Medicare earlier if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also called Lou Gehrig's disease). Supplemental Security Income (SSI) does not qualify you for Medicare on its own. Even if you receive SSI, you must meet one of the other requirements to qualify.

What if I have Part A already?

If you already have Part A and previously declined or never signed up for Part B, you can sign up for Part B only.

Can I call in and sign up instead of completing it online?

Yes. You can call 1-800-772-1213 and tell the representative you want to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B, or Part A only.

How can I check my status?
